Networking Guide: 4 steps to make the most of an event

Night Before:

  • Look at the list of attending firms and research companies that you are interested in: what industry are they in, their story, etc

  • Gain a background understanding of the companies, industries and general news on the market/economy (hint: read the AFR). This will set you apart and enable you to have more unique conversations

  • Develop a list of questions you would like to ask representatives and learn more from. Try not to memorise all of them as this can come off as unnatural, but have a couple conversation starters prepared

Morning Of:

  • Revise your prepared questions and think of some of your own experiences to talk about in the event that a representative asks

  • Decide on your outfit: be sure to dress the part

Attire:

  • Check the dress-code for the event

  • Appropriate clothing: Dress shirts and pants, loafers, low-heels or flats, simple accessories

  • Inappropriate clothing: Runners, jeans, T-shirts, sleeveless tops, flashy accessories

During Event:

  • To strike up a conversation with a rep, be friendly and confident when introducing yourself; remember that they are there to meet you as well

  • Conversation starters: What is your current position, what was your pathway to working at this firm, how have you been finding your position so far?

  • Further questions: What uni did you go to, what’s your favourite part of the job, what are some skills that you’ve learned in your position?

  • Ideally, try network in smaller groups to best differentiate yourself

  • Take mental notes to ensure you recall unique conversations and any advice

Post Event:

  • Follow up with representatives: if you mentioned wanting to catch up later, then message them on LinkedIn about a potential coffee chat

  • Write down some of your mental notes if you think they might be useful; potential points to discuss in a future conversation or your cover letter

  • Practice makes perfect! Attend more networking events to develop your confidence when talking to representatives or recruiters

Good luck with your next networking event!
